Here is my setup for shooting high school sports in a gymnasium with ‘normal’ lighting. In southern Ohio, normal lighting means cave-like. There are a few schools around with decent lighting, but hitting them with a few well-placed strobes makes a world of difference.

I tend to position the lights about 10′ off of the ground pointed slightly above the foul line, with the flash zoomed to 70mm. This provides adequate coverage from the 3-point line to under the basket. Flash output power varies, but a good starting point is 1/8 power on each strobe. You may have to bump your ISO up a bit, but the lower the flash power in action sports the better. I’ve had parents complain about the flashes going off, but it is permitted by the OHSAA, so nothing happened. For more information on off-camera lighting, check out the Strobist website.
